„Dubrovnik: An Engineering Masterpiece of the Middle Ages“

Step inside the famous stone walls and discover why Dubrovnik was centuries ahead of its time. While the rest of Europe struggled with hygiene and water supply, Dubrovnik was building sophisticated systems that are still admired today.

Tour Highlights: The Gates of the City & The Old Aqueduct: We begin at Pile Gate, where you’ll encounter the Large Onofrio’s Fountain. Discover the story of the 12-kilometer-long gravity-fed aqueduct built in 1438—a feat of 15th-century engineering that brought fresh spring water to the heart of the city.

Stradun: The Main street Above the "Cloaca": As we walk the main limestone street, we’ll talk about the secrets of Dubrovnik's sewer system. Built in the 14th century, this complex network of stone-carved channels (cloacas) was designed with such precision and slope that parts of it remain functional to this day.

Public Health & The Rector’s Palace: Learn about the Republic’s strict sanitary laws. We will discuss how the city managed waste and maintained public hygiene to prevent the spread of diseases while being one of the most densely populated Mediterranean hubs.

The Lazareti – The World's First Quarantine: We conclude our tour at the Lazareti complex (located just outside the Ploče Gate). Built in the 17th century, this was the first organized quarantine system in the world. Explore how Dubrovnik pioneered the concept of social distancing and isolation to protect its citizens and trade.
